What's included in a standard installation?

Ohme Home Pro EV Charger being mounted on a brick wall

What’s included in a standard installation?

Every home is different. However, we’ve worked to provide a standard installation package that covers over 80% of our installations.

A standard installation includes:

  • Installation of the Ohme charger onto a suitable permanent structure, such as a brick or plaster wall.
  • Up to 15 metres of cable to connect the Ohme charger to the distribution board/electric meter.
  • A cable run through existing building voids or clipped directly to the wall, taking the shortest route possible and passing through no more than one wall.
  • Associated protection devices to protect the charger and cable run.
  • Ensuring the Ohme charger is working properly and providing all of the necessary certification paperwork.

Non-standard or custom installations

Custom installations are typically more expensive as they require additional works such as extra cabling, running the cable underground, or upgrading your electricity system.

If your installation is identified as non-standard or custom, we’ll provide you with a quote for the additional works or materials. Should you wish to proceed, and upon payment of these additional costs, we’ll then schedule and proceed with your installation as usual.

Additional works and materials can include:

Surge Protection Device (SPD)
Surge Protection Devices are used to protect the electrical installation (such as the wiring and charging unit), as well as the vehicle plugged into the charger, against any damages which could be caused from electrical power surges (such as lightning).

RCD/Existing Board Upgrades
If the existing consumer unit (fuse board) has a Type AC RCD, this must be upgraded to a Type A RCD to meet the IET Wiring Regulations for EV charger installations. The requirement is to protect the electrical circuit against DC leakage, which Type AC RCD’s do not provide.

Ground Works
Ground works are required to bury cabling underground, if the cable cannot be secured to a permanent fixture (such as a wall) between two positions. Cabling cannot be laid over a ground surface (such as pathway or plant bed), due to both high risk of damage and potential trip hazards.

Additional Cabling
Cable routes over 15 meters in length are subject to additional costs. Note: the cable route meterage includes distances up and down walls (where required), and not just the straight distance between the electrical supply and charger position.

Additional Cable Trunking (& Accessories)
Installation of white PVC trunking over 6 meters in length or routes that require more than four bends (around walls) are subject to additional cost. Trunking is required to be installed where cabling cannot be routed through any existing building voids through the property.

Additional Labour
Additional labour may be required due to the works involved with routing the cable between the electrical supply and charger position. This may be either additional hours for one engineer to complete the works, or multiple engineers (dependent on the nature/safety of the works).

Bonding (Gas & Water)
Gas bonding can usually be identified by a yellow and green earth wire near the gas meter, while the water bonding wire is found near the water stop cock. Bonding must be in place before installing an EV charger, to prevent fatal electric shocks and fires (from fault currents being carried through the metal pipes of the property).

Can I do my own work?

Only Ohme approved installation partners are permitted to complete any work on your installation. They will complete the work from start to finish to ensure the safety of the installation.
