What is a DNO and why might we ask you to contact them?

A Distribution Network Operator (DNO) own and operates the local grid network that brings electricity from the national grid to your home or business. The UK has 7 DNOs managing different regions. You can find your DNO by clicking the link below and entering your postcode: Who’s my network operator? – Energy Networks Association (ENA)

DNOs handle the installation and maintenance of your property’s incoming power supply and the main fuse head (this protects the electrical supply into a property). Once you have completed your ‘Home Survey’, we might ask you to contact your DNO if we identify that you need a fuse upgrade or have a looped supply.

Why might you need a fuse upgrade?

A fuse upgrade might be necessary if your current fuse cannot support the additional load from the new charger. This typically occurs with older properties. The DNO will evaluate your existing setup and, if needed, upgrade the fuse to ensure safe and efficient operation of your new charger.

What is a looped supply?

In terraced or semi-detached houses, two or more properties often share the same electricity service cable. If your house has a looped supply, our installation partner will notify your DNO. They will check if your electricity supply is adequate and determine any necessary actions to ensure it meets installation requirements.

Why can’t we install a home charger on a looped supply?

A looped supply means your home shares an electricity cable with one or more neighbouring properties. This shared setup can lead to not having enough power for a home charger, which could cause safety issues and power disruptions.

To make sure your home charger works safely and efficiently, the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) needs to check and possibly upgrade your supply. This ensures your charger gets the power it needs without overloading the shared cable.

Why can Ohme not contact the DNO on your behalf?

Due to GDPR regulations, we are unable to contact the DNO on your behalf. However, we can provide you with their contact number so you can reach out to them directly.
