FAQs

What’s the difference between a ‘tethered’ and ‘untethered’ EV charger?

A tethered EV charger comes with a cable permanently attached so it’s always on hand for whenever you need to start a new charging session. No more cable hunts or playing hide-and-seek with loose cables: it’s your charging sidekick that’s always at the ready!

An untethered charger doesn’t come with a cable attached and is your universal charging companion. Whether your EV rocks a Type 1 or Type 2 connector, this charger is all-inclusive. Just grab your trusty charging cable (usually supplied with your car) and plug-in effortlessly.

How much does it cost to charge my car at home?

Charging your EV at home isn’t just smart – it’s the easiest and most cost-effective way to keep your car powered up. While your exact savings will depend on your car model and energy tariff, here’s an example using the Volkswagen ID.3 to put things into perspective:

• The average UK electricity rate is currently 27p per kWh*.

• Fully charging a 77kWh ID.3 battery from 0 to 100% at home would cost £20.79**.

• With a range of 346 miles on a full charge, driving the same distance in a typical petrol car would cost over £50 at current fuel prices.

And the savings don’t have to stop there! By switching to a smart home tariff like Intelligent Octopus Go (as low as 7p/kWh during off-peak hours) could cut your charging costs even more. Still driving the same Volkswagen ID.3, a full charge could cost just £5.39 – less than a third of the standard energy rate. Bringing annual home charging costs to as little as £119.

*Please note, energy prices fluctuate. To find your current cost per kWh, check your electricity bill or contact your provider.

**Costs calculated at 27p/kWh based on an average annual mileage of 6,800 miles.

What’s included in a standard installation?

All Ohme EV chargers come with standard installation included, which is all most customers need (covering 80% of homes). Here’s what’s included in our standard package:

• Mounting the Ohme charger onto a suitable permanent structure, such as a brick or plaster wall.

• Running up to 15 meters of cable to connect your charger to your distribution board/electric meter.

• A cable run through existing building voids or clipped directly to the wall, taking the shortest route possible and passing through no more than one wall.

• 6 meters of trunking to keep things neat and tidy.

• Associated protection devices to protect the charger and cable.

• Ensuring your charger is working properly and providing all required certification paperwork.

If your home has unique features or you’re planning something a bit more complex, don’t worry – we also offer custom installations. we guarantee a safe, high-quality installation by one of our Ohme approved installation partners. Find out more here.

How long does it take to charge my EV at home?

Charging your EV depends on three main factors: battery size, how fast your car can accept a charge, and your charger’s power. With a reliable 7.4kW Ohme home EV charger, a full charge from empty typically takes around 11 hours – ideal for an overnight top-up. Plug in before bed and wake up ready to hit the road!

Pro tip: For better battery health, aim to keep its charge between 20% and 80%. Dips and surges are inevitable, sticking to this range daily can help extend battery life.
