These surges can be caused by events such as lightning strikes, faults on the electricity network, or large electrical appliances switching on and off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-an-spd-protect\">What does an SPD protect?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"h-what-does-an-spd-protect-an-spd-is-designed-to-protect-sensitive-electrical-equipment-connected-to-your-system-including\">An SPD is designed to protect sensitive electrical equipment connected to your system, including:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your Ohme charger<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your electric vehicle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other electronics in your home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without protection, power surges can damage internal components, reduce product lifespan, or in some cases cause complete failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-are-spds-included-in-charger-installations\">Why are SPDs included in charger installations?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"h-why-are-spds-included-in-charger-installations-spds-are-commonly-included-as-part-of-ev-charger-installations-because\">SPDs are commonly included as part of EV charger installations because:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EV chargers are high-value electrical devices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are permanently connected to your home\u2019s electrical system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They may be exposed to outdoor conditions and grid fluctuations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many cases, including an SPD aligns with current wiring regulations and best practice for protecting your equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-i-know-if-i-have-an-spd\">How do I know if I have an SPD?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An SPD is usually installed within your consumer unit (fuse box) or alongside your charger installation.<br>You can identify one by:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A small module with a <strong>status indicator light or window<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Labels such as \u201cSPD\u201d or \u201cSurge Protection Device\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It may be installed by your installer as part of your charger setup<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re unsure, a qualified electrician can confirm whether one is installed.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"\" class=\"blockWrapper top-default bottom-default   \">\n\n\n<div class=\"contentWrapper textImageLeft  image\">\n            <div class=\"imageContainer\">\n            <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/ohme-ev.com\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2026\/03\/Support_surge_protection_2_UK.webp\" alt=\"\"\/>\n        <\/div>\n\n        <div class=\"textContainer\">\n        <h3 class=\"title\">How do I check if my SPD is working?<\/h3>\n        <h4 class=\"subtitle regular\"><\/h4>\n        <div class=\"text\"><p>Shown in this reference image on the left side, most SPDs have a visual indicator (usually a small coloured window or light) to show their status:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Green<\/strong> \u2013 protection is active<br \/>\n<strong>Red or no light<\/strong> \u2013 the SPD may no longer be providing protection<\/p>\n<p>We recommend checking this periodically, for example every few months or as part of general home checks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n        <div class=\"buttonsContainer\">\n                    <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-spds-need-to-be-replaced\">Do SPDs need to be replaced?<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. SPDs gradually wear out as they absorb power surges. This happens over time and isn\u2019t always visible unless you check the indicator.<br>If the indicator shows red or no light, the SPD should be replaced by a qualified electrician to ensure your
